A quick and easy solution for PTSD, Trauma and more

‍A quick and easy solution for PTSD, Trauma and moreAccelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, was created to help those who have experienced trauma to recover and heal.  It does this through a natural process of the brain called memory reconsolidation.  With treatment, you can change the way the traumatic memory is stored and replace negative images in the brain with positive images and sensations.  The ART session begins with the patient bringing a past traumatic experience to mind and visualize the memory from beginning to end.  The therapist’s hand moves the patient’s eyes from side to side, to help engage the visual part of the brain, and mimic REM- the dream stage of sleep during which memories are stored.  Rapid Eye Movements allow the patient to reshape their memories and move them to long-term storage away from the forefront of the mind.  The entire time the patient is in control, guided by the therapist, and only sharing what they choose.  Meanwhile the therapist will help the patient stay relaxed and calm, processing any strong emotions that may come up during visualization.  There’s no need to bring up specific details about your experiences that may be too painful to share.

The next step of ART is for the patient to imagine what they’d rather remember in place of the traumatic memory, continuing to use eye movements to facilitate the process. Voluntary Image Replacement is how negative images begin to be replaced with positive ones and is an important part of what makes ART so effective.  Within just an hour to an hour and a half session, the patient is able to go through an entire memory, the emotions connected to it, and find relief.

ART has been used to treat patients with post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, trauma from sexual abuse, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, physical and mental challenges, addictions, grief and job or relationship issues.

If you’re feeling stuck and unable to move forward in life because of a traumatic event or a job that has exposed you to painful images and experiences, OCD, anxiety or phobias we urge you to give Accelerated Resolution Therapy a try and discover the hope and freedom from healing that so many of our patients have already experienced.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly. The process is very straightforward, using relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Image Replacement to change the way in which distressing memories and images are stored in the brain so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions.

Does ART work for everyone?

No, not everyone is a good candidate for ART. Most importantly, to participate in ART you must have full use of your eyes. (although modifications can be made for the visually impaired). You must be able to hold onto a thought and you must be motivated to change. Further, ART is most effective with people who have experienced some sort of trauma in their lives. However, ART is also an effective mode of treatment for many other disorders. If you are still uncertain whether or not ART would be right for you, please contact me for more information.

What makes ART different from other eye movement therapies?

There are several different therapies that involve the use of eye movements. What makes ART unique is two-fold. Firstly, ART is a client-centered mode of therapy. It is interactive and allows the client to be an active participant in their treatment. Secondly, ART is not a passive approach. There are different procedures for different types of problems. ART considers each person unique and thus ART provides a variety of treatment protocols to address different problems. Finally, ART is focused on resolution and that resolution can happen in only 1-3 sessions. Read more here:

How does ART work?

This is a very complicated question. The truth is that very little is actually known about how the brain works and why any mode of therapy is helpful. What is known is that learning appears to be facilitated and strengthened by the R.E.M. stage of sleep. ART simulates the same type of brain activity that occurs during the R.E.M. stage. ART has been shown to facilitate in learning new patterns of thought and behavior .A large part of ART also involves voluntary memory replacement. This process does not “remove” the memory however it removes the “images” associated with it. Clients who have participated in ART have shown a change in affect which is almost immediate.

How long does it take to see results?

Most people will feel significant relief from symptoms after only one session. ART often resolves one presenting problem in a one to three session model. Clients may continue on in therapy to resolve other issues. In addition, clients may wish to use traditional talk sessions to process the changes and insights they have gleaned from ART’s eye movement sessions.

Are there any risks associated with ART sessions?

Yes, distressing or unresolved memories may surface through the use of the ART procedure. Some people have reported experiencing a high level of emotional or physical sensations during the ART sessions. If this is a concern for you, we recommend that you consult with your physician before participating in ART sessions. However, the ART process moves you out of the negative emotional state into a more peaceful and pleasant state quickly.

What does a session look like?

Sessions last 60-90 minutes on average. The client is always in control of the entire ART session, with the therapist guiding the process. Although some traumatic experiences such as rape, combat experiences, or loss of a loved one can be very painful to think about or visualize, this therapy rapidly moves clients beyond the place where they are stuck in these experiences toward growth and positive changes. The treatment is grounded in well-established psychotherapy techniques, and the end result is that traumas and difficult life experiences will no longer trigger strong emotions or physical reactions. Importantly, clients do not even have talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences with the therapist to achieve recovery. ART is not hypnosis.

Evidence-Based

ART is officially recognized at the federal level by the National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices (NREPP). ART was found to be an effective psychotherapy for PTSD, depression, stress, and personal resilience. ART was also classified as a promising therapy for symptoms of phobia, panic, anxiety, sleep and wake disorders, disruptive and antisocial behaviors, general functioning and well-being.

Scientifically Researched

ART has been shown to be highly effective in multiple studies, including a Department of Defense study of combat-related trauma. Find the scientific studies here:

How much does it cost?

New clients must schedule an intake assessment appointment in addition to the initial ART session. The initial assessment lasts 50 minutes and the cost is $180.  The initial ART session will last approximately 60-90 minutes and the cost is $285. Ongoing ART sessions can often be done in less than 60 minutes and those sessions are $180. Any time over the 60 minute session will be an additional $90.
