Stress Management in Management or Anywhere

I was reading a book by a British actress, Davinia Taylor, (paid link) who struggled with alcohol addiction, weight struggles and overall stress and fatigue. In one of the chapters, she was describing how when she is stressed and needs to wind down, she gets out her “spiky mat” and lays on it while she watches TV or scrolls on her phone. I had never heard of a spiky mat, so I typed it into the search bar on Amazon and found that it’s actually called an Acupressure Mat (paid link) It proposes that it puts pressure on acupressure meridians that will increase circulation. The item description reports that it helps relieve neck and back pain, muscle relaxation and stress reduction and sciatica relief. That all sounds great and it wasn’t very expensive so I decided to buy one and check it out. The mat is made of material that is lightly padded with little plastic spikes stuck all over it.

It comes with a mat about 2.5 ft by 1.5 ft and a semi-rounded bolster pillow for your neck, back of your knees or feet, also covered in plastic spikes. When I laid on it, I imagined I was one of those Indian yogi’s who lay on a bed of nails, but it didn’t actually hurt. I wouldn’t say it was comfortable, but as I lay there for about 15-20 minutes, I did relax. One time I was using it and I felt a slight cramp in my calf so I placed the bolster under my leg and after about 10 minutes, the tightness decreased and I didn’t have the cramp anymore. I have put the bolster under my feet and also under my head. I tend to put it under my feet or the back of my legs the most.

The second item that I decided to try for stress relief is called the Still Point Inducer. I was reading one of my favorite holistic remedy books called SUSTAIN ME by Barbara O’Neill, an Australian naturopathic physician https://amzn.to/3EvHKvq (Paid Link)
The chapter was on how to naturally relieve migraines and headaches. She reports that it is called the Still Point Inducer (Paid Link)because the pressure it applies… (to the back of the head) causes the fluid that moves around the brain to be induced into a momentary sill point. As the fluid resumes its flow, it moves in a more balanced ratio around the brain, which can result in reducing pain in the head. Having spent many years of my life dealing with headaches and migraines, I decided to check it out. Luckily, Amazon had that too!  At first I assumed it would go behind my neck but it didn’t fit there so I decided to read the directions. The Still Point Inducer looks like two tennis balls next to each other and connected and covered by foam. The two balls are placed at the back of the skull behind the ears between the occipital protuberance (the bone lump at the top of the back of the skull) and the base of the skull. It’s not comfortable, by any means, but as I lay there for 10 minutes, as the book suggests, I felt all of the tension ease up from my head and eventually go away. It works really well!

Now, I use the acupressure mat and the Still Point Inducer together and I find after 10 minutes, my whole body feels more relaxed, less tense and actually more energized.  I would suggest giving either or both of these items a try.  I believe, like many things, the more often you use them, the better the results.
